Brief Explanation : P-ATA(IDE) vs. S-ATA

IDE method and S-ATA method have different data transfer methods. IDE method is called as P-ATA, and it transfers data in parallel. IDE cable consists of several lines.
(80lines 40 pin or 40 lines 40pin)
The maximum transfer speed of IDE method is 133MB/S. The speed seemed to reach the speed limit of IDE method. As a result, S-ATA method appears.

S-ATA transfers data in serial. A cable is simplified in comparison with existing IDE cable, and the data transfer speed of S-ATA I is 150MB/S, faster than existing IDE method, but not much.
In other words, S-ATA hard disc and IDE hard disc have different forms of interface and power unit.
Basically, IDE hard disc can be attached, but S-ATA hard disc must have S-ATA controller in the main board. If a main board optionally supports a S-ATA hard disc, the S-ATA hard disc can be mounted.
(If main board doesn¡¯t support it, it is possible to attach S-ATA controller card to a PCI slot.)

IDE hard disc and S-ATA hard disc are optional: therefore, if a main board supports them, both can be used together. SD Ram and DDR Ram cannot be used together, but IDE hard disc and S-ATA hard disc can be used together.
