DVD Overview

Requirements from Related Industries
: Fierce competition was going on between the Toshiba-Matsushita camp and the
Philips-Sony coalition team surrounding the newly introduced DVD when the major US PC makers and Hollywood movie circles came up with their own respective requirements for DVD development.
Hollywood Movie Industry Requirements
High Capacity: 135 minutes on one side of a single disc
High Resolution: Video resolution better than Laserdisc based on MPEG-2 technology
(average video rate of 3.5 Mbps).
High Quality Audio: 5.1 channel Dolby Digital Surround
Multi Functions: Multi-language and many other feature set.
Computer Industry Requirements
Single format for computer and TV-based applications
Backward read compatibility with existing CD-ROMs
Forward compatibility with future R/W and WORM discs
A single file system for all content and disc media types
Low cost drives and discs
No mandatory container (caddy or cartridge)
Reliable data storage and retrieval
High on-line capacity
High performance for both sequential and non-sequential data types
The DVD-Video format finally came into being in 1996 satisfying all these requirements from the movie and computer industries. Although a DVD disc is the same in size as a CD, it has a capacity of nine times that of today's CDs, and so it is a much more sophisticated mechanism. Following is a detailed differences between CD and DVD.
